11. Prototype Adjustment on the Patient
Although the markings transferred from the impression to the cast provided a rough estimate of the location and inclination of the reconstructed ear, the two-part design of the wax positioner prototype allowed precise location of the ear because the prototype was adjusted on the patient. The wax baseplate was placed on the patient’s auricular defect site. The artist confirmed that the baseplate made complete contact with the contours of the soft tissue and ensured adequate stability when in position. In other words, the baseplate “locked” firmly into position on the patient’s head. The ear sculpture was then adjusted on the baseplate to achieve the ideal position with regard to location, projection, and inclination. |
